Tradition and history
Part of the ladin cultureThe Dolomites are also a popular tourist destination because of their living traditions. Canazei was first mentioned in documents in 1337 under the name Canatsché. Numerous events allow you to get to know the customs of the Ladin people. A highlight in the packed calendar of events is Te anter i Tobié, which takes place every year in July when the doors to the traditional barns are opened for three days. Take this opportunity to get to know traditional crafts and customs.
The Gran Festa d'Istà, the great festival of the Ladin people, also takes you back to a bygone era that still shapes the way the inhabitants of Canazei see themselves today. Things were not always as peaceful in the picture-book idyll of Canazei as they are today. Those interested in history are recommended to visit the “The First World War” museum, where exhibits tell the story of how the war unfolded in the region and the conditions under which the soldiers lived in the mountains.
